FAQs

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

While there are some similarities between coaching and psychotherapy, they are very different activities.

Psychotherapy is a healthcare service and is usually reimbursable through health insurance policies. This is not true for coaching. Although both coaching and psychotherapy utilize knowledge of human behavior, motivation and behavioral change, and interactive counseling techniques, the two activities have very different purposes, goals, areas of focus and emphasis, and levels of professional responsibility. Psychotherapy focuses on identifying, diagnosing, and treating mental health issues within a professional relationship designed to help clients alleviate symptoms, understand motivations, and change behaviors that may interfere with effective emotional, social, or intellectual functioning.

The main purpose in a coaching relationship is to enhance your performance, learning, and fulfillment based on your goals and aspirations. We may discuss specific goals, projects, life balance, job performance and satisfaction, or general conditions in your personal or professional life. Coaching utilizes personal strategic planning, value clarification, brainstorming, motivational counseling, and other counseling techniques. However, in contrast to psychotherapy, coaching does NOT involve diagnosis, testing, assessment, or treatment of mental health disorders.

Each person has different needs and desires when engaging in counseling, coaching, or direction.  In the intake paperwork and at the first session, I invite you to share with me any special needs or requests that you have. If I am able, I work towards providing for those needs. I have several types of space in my office – places to sit across from each other or places side by side at a table where we can do projects while we talk. I also have a box of different types of fidgets, an assortment of Squishmallows, and a weighted blanket.  I also provide virtual sessions for those who are more comfortable in their own space.
